When a person of Catholic faith (typically thirteen years old), makes their Confirmation it symbolizes a public announcement of their own decision to serve God.
During a Confirmation ceremony a person that is being confirmed will go through what is called a laying on of the hands. What happens is the Bishop will recite a prayer for guidance from the Holy Spirit and physically lay his hands on the person being confirmed. Next, will come the anointing phase. This is to help symbolize that the Holy Spirit now lives on inside the confirmed individual.

The confirmed person will also have a sponsor (could be a god parent) help escort them through this process. The sponsor’s role is to reassure and help the confirmed individual keep true to their Catholic faith.
